Winners Shield

The shield was made by two of our loyal supporters - Roy Allison and Paul Brunton - both involved in The Challenge from the beginning.

The shield is presented to the fastest team and overall winners of the 50mile event.

The Robert Walters Shield

This trophy commemorates the life of Henry Robert Walters, who devoted his life to Scouting as Borough Commissioner for Haringey and Headquarters Commissioner for Rover Scouts.

Presented to the overall runners up of the 50mile event.

The Grove Trophy

This trophy, made by Paul Brunton and Roy Allison, represents a pair of crutches. It is named after Lily and George Grove who were verderers of Scout Park in Wood Green, North London.

Presented to the fastest team whose average age is 33 years (whole years) per walker not winning any other award.

The Sharon Blower Cup

Donated by the 14th Southgate in memory of one of their team members.

Presented to the fastest team with all walkers under 18 years not winning any other award.

The Chief’s Cup

Named after Major General Sir Michael Walsh CB DSO, then Chief Scout, who presented the trophies at our 1983 event. The Chief specifically asked to present a trophy that recognised and encouraged teamwork.

50mile Novice Trophy

The Novice trophy was originally donated by Benson F Catt JP, the County Commissioner for Greater London North at the birth of the event, and the current trophy was presented by a team of leaders from Romford District.

Presented to the fastest team, none of whom have previously entered the 50 mile Challenge not winning any other award.

The County Trophy

This trophy was made and donated by Paul Hayday a previous Assistant County.

Presented to the fastest team from Greater London North not winning any other trophy.

50km Winners Trophy

Donated by Steve Hagger, former secretary of the Southern 50 Committee. It is modelled on an old walking boot and represents the struggling walker's efforts.

50km Runners Up Award (Galleon Trophy)

Originally presented by Ricky Bickley who held many appointments over the years in Greater London North including Deputy County Commissioner.

Presented to the overall runners up in the 50km Challenge.

The Martin Hornsby Tankard

This tankard was presented in memory of Martin Hornsby who died in March 1999. Martin was a keen hill-walker and naturalist and a valued member of the organising committee.

The Ricky Bickley Trophy

This trophy is in memory of Ricky Bickley a long time supporter of the Southern 50 who was always to be found at a checkpoint on the event. The trophy was made by Daniel Bush, a member of the organising committee.

Donated by John Hall, who was for many years chairman of the Southern 50 committee.
